It's interesting how Ryukishi did that.
When characters like Maria or Satoko suffer, it raises some of the highest sympathy in weeb fiction. Especially Satoko since people still have a hard time forgiving Teppei even after his (hacky) redemption, while many don't condemn Rosa at all.
But Rika was always too alien, too inhuman to be sympathetic in that way and Bern is just evil. Writing Rika like that was an accidental stroke of genius fro, Ryukishi. Had she been more relatable, Higurashi would have been too sad.

It's so nice of Ryukishi to write novels where 99% of the events are fake.
