The only thing he actually used the gold for was assurance on a loan through one of the family's business contacts. He never actually spent any of it to build his fortune. His kids got it a lot easier and they still had to embezzle more. Part of the point is that Kinzo got lucky by risking it all whereas Krauss constantly gets fucked because it takes still as well as luck to make it big off of risky investments. He's also never stated to be an inventor by anyone afaik
