I sympathize with Calvin. There should be as few expectations as possible, one kanji, sentence card or episode at a time. Who cares when you get there, as long as you get there and can point back to your efforts and say "yeah, I may have fucked up here and there but at least I made it", 七転び八起き!

There's literally no point in memorizing readings. Let's say you memorize that 人 is nin and jin, additionally you know 大 is dai and tai. Now there is still no way to know if 大人 is daijin,dainin,taijin, or tainin. (hints it's actually none of those because readings are useless)
