This stuff is generally true for congenital DID, when someone is born "plural" due to a brain defect instead of having a single personality like you and me.

Trauma-induced DID is much more disruptive and could be considered a different variety. The brain still ends up developing in an unusual way, but this is caused by the young mind creating alters to deal with early childhood trauma, which makes the brain develop like that. You are born with a normal brain and it develops "wrong" because it's become used to separating memories and thoughts in different alters. This permanently transforms a healthy young brain into a defective one, similar to congenitals, and it only gets more warped as it grows.

Basically, trauma-induced DID means using your young mind wrong (with maladaptive defense mechanisms like alters) and causing the physical brain itself to adjust to that "wrong use" as it grows.
