Just read what you want to read, really. Pretty much everything's gonna be rough in the beginning, may as well read something that's entertaining to you. The only thing I could specifically recommend is focusing on VNs, because text hookers saved my life when I didn't know kanji well, but if you don't like VNs then there's no point.

If you really want a specific recommendation, Zettai Reiiki is the first manga I read in JP only and it was super moe. Things like To Love Ru (dumb SOL harems) are good too because you're not missing much even with awful comprehension.

Yeah. I know it's probably objectively better to start way earlier, but reading was a miserable experience before I got to 3k-ish cards and knew over 1,000 kanji (Core2k coincidentally teaches around 1,000 kanji, or at least, the core2k/6k I did did).
