I think they said it in an interview. They had a vision for Miku since V2 that they couldn't perfectly realize with Vocaloid, and now that they own the engine they want to realize it. It also seems to match with the rumors that they disliked Vocaloid aiming for more realism with each version and dropping features that they pitched for like cross-synthesis in V5. Though if that will translate to design, that was just a guess. If ixima makes someone that looks really good they'll probably pick it regardless.

I'd guess most of the songs posted in the last 3-4 years uses at least one of V4x voicebanks (which include the appends).
