the wolf is the Ushiromiya's real animal. when Kinzo switched from the wolf, his ancient mother, his progenitor and protector, the one who sheltered him when he was vulnerable, to the eagle, that thieving raptor, it brought the death of the old, natural and good order of this world. the death of the confederation of mutual benefit, the death of tradition, in favor of a system hell bent on conquest, of hatred and fratricide.

Kinzo no longer needed the wolf (or so he thought). Kinzo outgrew the ancient cave, now he no longer needed to suckle. he built his great island, but his ambition could not be satiated, and so he resolved that he would have his glory no matter the cost. this is the ideology of the eagle. to build a nest high in the sky, and arrogantly try to reach into the golden land, thinking you can reach it. thinking your journey outside the cave will succeed. thinking you can wander forever, and that you will conquer all. the eagle thinks itself higher than the wolf, for the eagle can soar across the land and travel to places far away, exotic and fruitful places. the eagle laughs at the wolf in the cave, calling her backward, and stupid, and decrepit and outdated. the eagle wishes to fly to heaven, he genuinely thinks he can.

the upstart ushiromiya is arrogant as well. the eagle told rudolf, "come with me and i will bring you with me to the golden land." and so rudolf, ambitious and unthinking, surrendered himself to the eagle's talons. even now as the eagle's claws crush his bones, he thinks it will all be worth it, he thinks that he is making the right choice. when the eagle tells him to kill his siblings who still live by the wolf, he does it. he fools himself into thinking this is acceptable, because they will not see heaven with him, therefore their lives are meaningless.

the wolf knows no such arrogance. the wolf does not need it. the wolf knows that she cannot fly, or jump, or run to the heavens. she stays on the good earth, tending the litter in the cave. she knows that her place is not in the heavens... it is on this magnificent earth, for terra is the only place she will ever know, and this is okay. it was the place where she came into being, it is the place where she will die, as her mother before her did, and her daughters after her will do, forever. and this is how the gods intended.

the wolf does not come to chase us. she does not try to drag us back into the cave. for she knows what will come of us. we will be crushed and devoured by the eagle. and even as we fall into the terrible thing's gizzard, we will still say, "I will soon be in the golden land. This will all be worth it." the pups that wander away are not worth chasing. they are not worth saving. even if she could save us, it is not her place to do so. if the gods intended us to be devoured by the eagle, so be it. once we are gone, she will have a new litter, and she knows this. and this new litter may follow the eagle, or it may stay with her. it won't matter, since there will be a litter after that one as well.

and now still Battler thinks that the eagle is his spirit, he thinks that the eagle's blind fury and ambition will save him. he thinks he can reach up and scrape the golden land and be an equal to the witches. only the old, the tried and true, only the wolf can be your savior. the reasoned, the noble, the honorable. the ancient mother and protector. she will care for us again, but she will not chase us. it matters not to her whether or not we survive. we must go back to the cave, no one will push us to do so.
