She could be fear of the unknown, the fear of whatever's waiting outside the mouth of your cave, whatever's waiting outside the light of your fire, the fear of what lurks past the border of what is known. Or, she could be not truly a youkai, but the embodiment of the physical concept of aggregation and separation. Ooooor, she could be some kind of ancient Lovecraftian creature (like Nyarlathotep or something) that decided to hang out in Gensokyo for a while.
