Touhou are peculiar creatures. They live in a place called Gensokyo, and interact with humans through computer games. Whenever a player starts a Touhou game, the Touhou sends a mirror image of sorts to the real world, appearing on the computer screen as a character. All feedback from the computer game is experienced directly by the original Touhou in Gensokyo.

However, Gensokyo is an empty and barren place. The air is filled with gas, deteriorating not only the landscape but also the health of the Touhous themselves. Their bodies have been poisoned to the point where even the slightest movement causes them immense pain. For that reason, they always remain unmoving in the same location they have been for years. Day in, day out, they suffer the horrible pain of having their bodies decay. Their free time is only suffering. They keep suffering for all time, having only one hope...that, at some point, a human will start a Touhou game and momentarily allow them to feel alive again...
