What many people seem to glance over though is that Keitarou's desire to make as many friends as possible isn't just a typical MC character trait, but actually more like a curse inherited by his father. Keitarou idolizes Keiichi and weighs his every word like gold, but in doing so he has adapted a warped perception of friendship which compulses him to be on good relations with every person he meets.
He has never before experienced hardships and feuds due to that and believes that, since friends equal power, more friends equal even more power.
What Keitarou understands under the term "friendship" is more akin to allies or accomplices. His compulsory behavior of handing out business cards and chatting with strangers was planted by his father's misguided comments about the unusually strong bonds he formed with the game club back in 83', and not a natural part of Keitarou's personality.
