I mean, think of it from Battler's perspective. Right after the massacre he hears all this shit about Shannon/Kanon/Beatrice straight from the horses mouth and right after they escape together, she dies right before his eyes. I think it was only natural for him to become fixated on Beatrice, if you're looking at it from the perspective of Tohya.

I also think that the Battler/Beatrice relationship is a huge parallel to Dante/Beatrice. Dante also only saw his Beatrice twice, yet was so enraptured with her that when she died he wrote a bunch of poems in her honor. The fact that Battler himself didn't know Yasu that well at all is a reference to that, imo. Both Dante/Battler were enraptured in this 'ideal woman' who they loved but never knew.
