There's no way to slow the gourds breaking, however you do have until turn 90 to break 5 gourds. So that's 90 turns you can put to some use before shit hits the fan.

to get the easy affection bonus for Rance from Natori I think you need to see a scene with Natori when she's at 7/7 affection first, then bone her in Rances place.

I think there's a divide in though between the different difficulty modes. At high difficulties you're probably using house bonuses like One Eye and Takeda, so most of the other units you get during gameplay are pretty inconsequential.

In the low difficultys with no house bonuses, everything matters on the commanders you recruit. Personally I don't use tend footmen at these low difficulties, I prefer to put something else in the front row that deals more damage, bushi. There may be times when they do take a beating and even get annihilated, but even then rarely do they die.
