People are supposed to have a layer or two of fat on them.
Granted that they are also supposed to have their fair share of muscle underneath.

And women especially are naturally inclined to grow these infamous belly-rolls.
Men and women store fat a bit differently from eachother. Just like how they grow muscle a bit differently from eachother.

And during pregnancy said fat is distributed evenly over the belly, retaining the layer of fat but without the rolls.
Most elite athletes of today actually wouldn't perform all too well with tasks of the past.
They have too little fat and their physique is too specialized for the rules of and the limited time devoted to their games.

If you don't have much fat on you, you could probably do well (especially if you have a measured body-fat percentage of below 10%) from gaining a few percent, or at the very least take no harm from it.
Though fat or no fat, fat is no excuse for not exercising.

I really don't get why people are so incredibly hung up about fat. First and foremost it's still muscle that's the most important. No matter if you have practically no body-fat, or if you have truly excessive amounts of it, you should still have decent amount of muscle on your body. Beyond that having a reasonable level of fat just contributes to your health further.
But whenever anyone hints at the idea at fat being relatively fine or even positive in reasonable magnitudes, people always go on the "mindless chubby-chaser white-knight" assumption train.

Don't be a pile of bones, avoid being a blob of fat. No matter the case remember that you should have muscle on you, and that most levels of fat between pile of bones and blobs of fat are a-ok, just remember that you still need to be fit even disregarding your body-fat percentage.
