I don't think it's all that bad. It would definitely work better as a VN or a manga since the anime does feel a bit rushed. I just hope that the normal Higu/Umi threads that appear once in a blue moon won't be ruined forever because of the new anime. But seeing as the crossies are already seeping out of their general, I'm not getting my hopes up.

I like your motive more than mine, and some pieces are missing but basically, you've solved it.

<CONGRATULATIONS>

I'll divulge what happened exactly.
As I've said before, motive doesn't really interest me much, but I'd planned for the entire thing to be a practical joke. It all came from the line Jessica dropped once that Kinzo would beat her with a stick. She schemed together with Nanjo to play a prank on Kinzo. Nanjo notoriously is easy as shit to make an accomplice. He also has access to drugs, because I like to think of Nanjo as having a lot more to him than sees the eye. Jessica convinced Nanjo to sneak some acid into Kinzo's office. As most of you might know, the hallucinogenic drug acid can come in the form of a stamp. During the chess match, Nanjo switched Kinzo's stamps with identical looking ones, laced with acid. When Kinzo ended the chess match and did his paperwork, he wanted to send a letter. He licked the acid-laced stamp and put it on the letter. Shortly after that he started hallucinating. The samurai armour looked to Kinzo like an assailant. Kinzo went insane and grabbed the samurai sword in order to fend it off. In his mind, the enemy was everywhere, so he hacked and slashed the sword everywhere, eventually striking it right in the middle of his desk, the point sticking upwards. He couldn't get it out, and the samurai was inching closer and closer, so Kinzo ran up to the bookcase behind his desk and climbed it, trying to get away, explaining the scratch marks he made with his nails as he frantically tried to climb it to the top to get away. Eventually though, he lost his footing and fell backwards, piercing himself with the samurai sword still stuck upright in the desk. He pierced his back with full force and fell backwards, dead.

Once everyone got into the room, Nanjo confirmed Kinzo's death and shat himself. This was never meant to happen. He quickly disposed of the acid-laced stamps in his pocket to avoid suspicion.

It was all a practical joke gone awfully wrong.

But like I said, your motive makes more sense in the continuity of the story of Umineko. You should try your hand at one of these mysteries some time. I usually focus on the mystery, leaving the motive and culprits aside as they're not that interesting to me. I know Nanjo probably wouldn't drug Kinzo, but to me the characters are just pieces.

Mystery-kun here. Sorry for being away for a bit, I've been busy. I hope to have a new mystery for you all to enjoy soon.
Actually come to think of it, I seem to remember the last mystery being left unsolved, although that was quite a few threads ago now.

I'm more confused about her real goal.

>The witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures.
>One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land.
>One shall be, the resurrection of the souls of all the dead.
>One shall be, even the resurrection of the lost love.
>One shall be, to put the witch to sleep for all time.

The final part of the epitaph says that after the witch revives and the door to the Golden Land is opened, she will give the survivors those four treasures. This sounds like she will reveal that the murders were fake, tell the family that they can keep the gold, confess her love to Battler and go live somewhere outside the island.

But what's her goal exactly? When the witch "revived" after killing 13 people, she never did any of these things. Which means that the REAL ceremony in which 13 people have to be sacrificed refers to the riddle of the epitaph. She expects someone to solve the epitaph before she will stop the whole plan and give the winner the four treasures. It's an extremely unlikely outcome and she knows it.

So... What happens if Battler finds out that she's the culprit? Is it the same as solving the epitaph? Does she expect to blow up everything unless Battler manages to win this harmless game in which people are participating with no clue that there is a massive bomb threatening their lives?

MYSTERY TIME

A heated argument ensued during the family conference on Rokkenjima. As the siblings go to their rooms to cool down, Battler happens to walk into the main house, wanting to get some hot milk because he had trouble sleeping. Suddenly, the sound of a gun firing echoes in the entire mansion. Following his ears, Battler rushes up the stairs towards Krauss's study. He finds Kumasawa furiously trying to open the door. She tells Battler she was just doing the rounds, closing windows and drawing the curtains when she heard the gunshot. Eva, Rudolf and Rosa soon turn up, saying they heard a gunshot. Seeing Kumasawa trying to open the door but failing, Rudolf grabs a fire extinguisher from the wall and slams it into the door, breaking it open. Rudolf, Eva, Rosa, Battler and finally Kumasawa enter the room. Inside the room is Krauss at his desk, a gun in his hand and a bullet through his brain, blood everywhere. He's dead.

Battler investigates the scene. He finds a set of keys in Krauss's pocket. Kumasawa confirms that these are the only keys on Rokkenjima that could lock Krauss's study. No master keys work on that door. The bolt on the door was also set to lock when Battler investigated it.
Everything points to suicide until suddenly the phone on Krauss's desk rings and Battler answers it. A man on the phone asks for Krauss, saying that his reservation at a fancy restaurant to celebrate his marriage anniversary with Natsuhi has gone through.
Battler is suspicious. If Krauss had taken his own life, why would he make a restaurant reservation one hour before killing himself? Battler tells everyone that he thinks this was a murder.

Yet is this was murder, how on earth did the killer escape the perfect locked room that was Krauss's study? The room didn't have any windows, and everyone searched the room extensively but found no killer hiding anywhere.
What exactly happened here?

You know the game. Show me some blues and I'll grant you some reds.

>the VN has a ton of content that makes it good for discussion

I feel ashamed.
Let's get some Umineko discussing going on.

/RED/ One extra key exists, which is normally in Kinzo's personal possession. This key can lock the door from the outside. However, the killer never used this key!

You are most competent.

However. Kinzo was definitely killed.
Kinzo, Krauss and Natsuhi had a serious talk. It was clear that Kinzo did not have much time to live, so he concocted a plan. He wanted to go out with a bang, and surprise the family, making them believe in magic. The three of them made a plan.
Krauss would dress up in a black cloak and mask and shoot Kinzo to death. Natsuhi would discover this "crime" only when Battler would be in the main hall. Battler had to be a reliable witness.
Natsuhi screamed and caught Battler's attention. Krauss, masked and cloaked pretended to knock out Natsuhi. As Battler fled to call for help, Natsuhi donned the cloak and mask and put her purple dress on a dummy. She ran out into the garden where everyone saw her. In fact, she was the masked villain and the purple dress everyone saw was worn by a dummy she carried on her back. Once inside the shed, she changed back into her regular clothes and cut up the dummy using the tools in the garden shed. She hid the evidence, including the clothes, mask and dummy in the paint buckets.
Once the door was unlocked, all she had to do was act afraid and disheveled.
Eventually the whole family would believe this impossible crime to be the work of magic, of a witch. Thus fulfilling Kinzo's final wish of making the family believe in the supernatural. Krauss and Natsuhi only agreed to this because they knew Kinzo was weeks away from dying anyway, and Kinzo promised to leave the gold to them if they managed to fool the family/servants.

I hope you all enjoyed the mystery.
I will see you when another animal cries.

Probably a dumb question but I still don't get this.
If Shannon and Kanon are personalities adopted by Yasu, what the hell is going on on Rokkenjima on a daily basis? Kumasawa and Genji know about it, but what about the rest?
Is Jessica having girly conversations with Shannon in the afternoon, only to be summoned to dinner a couple of hours later by Kanon? Does she not see that they are the same person? Do Krauss and Natsuhi not realise there are two people on the servant's roster that are actually just one person? No one ever sees the both of them together.

Yeah, Nanjo wouldn't work as a killer. Like I said though, I'm gonna start working on a game soon and I'll likely do it very differently than what we've seen before as it's just been lists of characters to cross off.

I was banned for three days just for commenting on the fact that spank-anon was banned. Because it was off-topic.

But if that's the case, I'll write up a fic soon. I'll start working on a game as well. It's been a while I think, and it'll take me a while to get it ready. I think one game per thread shouldn't really delay the threads like they have done in recent times when we got four games a week.
I'll do it a bit differently though, the way games went on in previous threads was a bit weird. Like one anon said, it was more of a "cross everyone from the list until you get the killer" and less of an actual story or mystery.

Natsuhi catches up with Gohda and sees what he has done. She goes insane. Her daughter lay there, dead, her throat slit and blood gushing out and mixing with the heavy rain to create a pool of watery blood. Gohda tried to reason with her, tells them of their plan and their love for each other. During the fight, Natsuhi loses her cool and shoots Gohda in the head.

Absolutely distraught, Natsuhi falls to her knees and cries. She has lost everything. Her lover, her daughter, her family. It's all gone terribly, terribly wrong. Somehow, she feels compelled to go back to where this all started, the gold room. But she was not alone. Kinzo sat there, a chair facing the clock wih the bomb mechanism. Kinzo explains that he had hidden here as soon as he heard there were murders taking place. He had been contemplating blowing up the island, ridding himself of this useless family and ending his own life. Natsuhi and Kinzo confide in each other for the first time, and they truly bond. They share their ideas about the family, how they were unfit of the Ushiromiya name and eventually Kinzo tells Natsuhi that she is a true Ushiromiya. Natsuhi could not believe her ears. She starts crying in Kinzo's arms. He tells her it's alright. They will meet in the Golden Land. They both agree that there is nothing left to live for. Their lives ruined by this cursed family. Their hands went for the bomb mechanism, Natsuhi's on Kinzo's. They activate the bomb at exactly one minute to midnight.

Meanwhile Battler and George just discovered the bodies of Jessica and Maria in the rose garden and George is absolutely in tears. Just as Battler walks a bit further and thinks he sees another body in the distance, Gohda's, the island explodes. And when the seagulls next cried, nobody was left alive. And thus ends this tale of love and despair.
