I don't get what you're talking about. Doesn't it just enter あ if you tap on あ without swiping in a direction? That's how the google one works at least, is that the version you're using?

I definitely don't use it for romaji, if I need to type english I switch to the qwerty keyboard.

Have you seen that many scenes of people typing on phones? I couldn't remember anything specific off the top of my head but I opened kimi no na wa to check, and sure enough they're using the flick keyboard.
