Masutatsu Ooyama, 大山 倍達, born Choi Yeong-eui, was born in Japanese Korea in the early twenties. Since his childhood he was taught a system of Chinese Kung Fu called Baguazhang. He had mastered the eighteen arts of Chinese kempo. He then moved to Japan, where he learned Goju-ryu karate, wrestling, and Judo, and he joined the Air Force. His karate was taught by THE Gichin Funakoshi (this man was pretty much the first martial artist to solidify the concept of "karate". He is a person of venerability and of high esteem. He dedicated three years of his life in hermitage in the forest to training karate and zen buddhism. He sat underneath waterfalls, struggled against wild animals, hojo undo, et cetera.

He returned to civilization and demonstrated his prowess and his legacy lives on throughout the world in one of the most well renowned karate styles of all time, kyoukushin karate.
