The original D&D monster manual described them as dog-like creatures (pic), so I guess that just stuck with them along with pig orcs. If I had to say why they're still like that I'd look at video games.

From some art, one could indeed mistake them For some sort of dog type thing. I'd imagine the author glanced at the art without reading the description.
