1. learn hiragana/katakana
2. learn what sentence structure, word types, particles, and verb agglutination look like
3. sign up for one of those fancy anime/manga/LN tracking sites
4. read 50 volumes of light novels and watch 50 days of anime that you are interested in
5. now you know enough Japanese to try for any specific goal you have.

I read the 6th volume of yotsubato yesterday, after taking a break from yotsubato to watch more anime. I only mined like 4 words. What manga or LN do you guys reccomend that is a little harder than yotsubato, but not too much harder,
