This this this.

Take this expert MS Paint image I just made.
"A" is outright flaming: "Fuck you faggot"-style /b/ responses filled with pointless hatred. "C" is being super nice and welcoming everyone with open arms, the kind of thing you see on a forum desperately trying to please everyone and attract new members. "B" is neutral and honest. You don't make any extra effort to be kind nor to flame. If you were looking for genuine criticism, "B" is the most obvious choice. You would trust Person B's word over Person A or Person C's.
For a board like /jp/, "B" and a small region both to the left and right (though perhaps more so to the right) are ideal. You don't have to qualify your posts with nice words, though you don't have to be a dick to people either. Maybe a little bit of harshness is healthy because elitism is good for /jp/, but don't delve into angsty teen territory. Conversely being nice in moderation is okay, but too many people seem eager to please and it's more annoying than flaming since people take it seriously.
Too many regulars seem to tend far too much towards "C" lately, and I'm not sure why. I say "lately" but it's probably not a recent development--I've just noticed it more.
