>I don't really believe the lie detector is for real.
Brain scientist here. It's not real as in "99.9 %" like the doctor says, but it's not all lies either. If I'm right about which kind of machine they use, it works by measuring skin conductance, which increases in automatic nervous system reactions. While this kind of reaction occurs when people lie, there's problems in using it as a lie indicator, since they can occur for other reasons too (such as nervousness or surprise).

So in the average person, through it probably shows an increased conductance as they lie, you can't be certain that an increased conductance necessarily equals a lie. And though this hopefully doesn't concern our AKB girls, there's also some problematic groups that don't show these reactions at all when lying, such as psychopaths.

Even so, machines like this have been used for lie detection in several countries in contexts such as criminal interrogation. In these cases where it's still used, it's testing over repetitions with critical vs. non critical stimuli. For example, in a murder case someone could list names of weapons over and over again, and see if the conductance consistently rises when they mention the one used in the crime (obviously, this only works if it's not public information).

However, it's use in the traditional, AKBINGO-like "say a statement, rise in conductance = lie" has decreased or even ceased in most countries, because it is not reliable enough and it's hard to differentiate between different emotional states in such cases.
