Is RTK really that bad? People keep saying that it sucks cause it doesn't include readings. What do I complement it with?

How much did RTK actually help you with learning Japanese? And is book 2 even worth it?

Complete this entire book and then come back asking for advice. If you're actually serious about learning Japanese get kanji down first. No there isn't another more efficient way, yes it will require a lot of effort. inb4 Heisig haters: There isn't a more efficient method to internalize kanji, yes mnemonics can sound silly at times but there's a reason people that enter memory competitions always use mnemonics to memorize information, because they work.

What was your learned-kanji-per-hour speed for those of you who used this book?

Mine is only about 3-4 kanji per hour including daily revisions in Anki and I think I must be doing something wrong like spending too much time to find abstract, but logical explanation for the primitives (e.g. "rolled like a snake, with one of the four edges (a quarter) hidden and the rest exposed" for 巻). Other factors might be that I'm doing so only in public transport where there are too many distracting things to keep concentrated and trouble with some keywords I don't know meaning of and have to look them up in the dictionary (English is not my native language).

What does /jp/ think of the Heisig system of learning kanji? I have both volumes 1 and 2 of Remembering the Kanji. Volume 1 focuses on the meanings, while volume 2 focuses on the readings.

Is this any good? First year Japanese student here, we just got into kanji and I'd like to study some more over the summer, particularly kanji.

Some of them are pretty fun to draw.

Anyone use this? I'm on about 300 and it's the most frustrating and mind numbingly boring thing I've ever experienced.

1.You waste time memorizing silly mnemonics.

2. You waste time remembering kanji "primitives" that are completely made up.

3. All the repetition you do could have been better spent repeating vocabulary instead.

4. Heisig's order of learning kanji is stupid. You learn difficult ones too fast, and save needed ones for last.

5. The best way to learn Japanese kanji is to use them in context. So learn lots of words and they will come to you.

6. Japanese is better learned studying all aspects concurrently. Focusing on one bit (kanji meanings) will automatically lead to neglect of the rest. Grammar, conversation, reading, writing, kanji etc. all hangs together.

7. Silly stories in your head is a waste of effort in learning Japanese.

I love being so OP'd at learning this language now.

Fuck this shit, these dumbass stories are harder to remember than the kanji itself. What a waste of money.

Learn Japanese, or at least finish 'Remembering the Kanji'

I've been going through this for a couple weeks now. How long did it take for you to complete this?

I'm currently in the middle of this + kanji.koohii.com.

It's pretty fun. 352 down, 1690 to go.

I've really been impressed with the my retention rate. It started at a steady 95% but my last few reviews have fallen to around 85%. Still, I never would have imagined it before.

What does /jp/ think of Heisig's RtK? I mean, seriously, is it really a complete waste of time like some people suggest?
