there are so many limitations when it comes to the 'physical world'. it's more fun to imagine a future where virtual reality has reached a point, that when within certain conditions, is nearly (if not totally) indistinguishable from reality.

think about a time you played a video game and experienced a level of immersion that has you fully engrossed in that game. even reading text can give you the impression of being transported to another world. imagine the possibilities when full presence is achieved.

you could convince your brain of nearly anything when providing the right stimuli. you can convince yourself of interactions taking place, that would be VERY expensive, if not impossible, to reproduce in the real world.

also... who wants a 3d version of their 2d waifu? that's gross.

Just get an Oculus Rift or Hololens.

You get both the benefit of having the display always wherever you look, as well as the ability to play VR/AR content.
