I think the question the OP wants to get at is "do shitty translations degrade the reading experience of a VN?" Obviously the answer is yes, but the real question is "how much does it degrade?"

Generally, everyone agrees that MangaGamer's translation of Edelweiss is god awful, but I still think most people ended up enjoying the game after they got past that, judging by the 7.44 score on vndb and the feedback on English VN-related websites and forums.

A bad translation will degrade the experience no doubt, but if the original game is great enough (as in Edelweiss's case), I think it'll shine through even through the most hack job of translations.
