>Kṣitigarbha took a vow to leave hell empty before he’ll achieve buddahood, in Japanese tradition this largely manifests as depicting him as protector of the souls of children, but older sources feature a variety of parables in which Kṣitigarbha preaches to individual people to save them from hell.
