2 本音 and 建前 are not that binary. for example you will get different 建前 depending if you are a tourist or if you life there as a resident (I am talking about being a foreigner in both cases).
3 I was not there, maybe they didn't understand if you were asking about the word- whenever you can use it safely in public (in that case they'd probably tell you you'd better not use it), or of they find it offensive (they maybe don't, see 1)
