does 2ch / imageboards have the same "extremist hate speech platform" reputation in Japan that 4chan has gotten in the West in the minds of normies?

or is it more seen as just a general nerd/otaku website?

anyone well-versed in using clusterfuck like 5ch (ex-2channel)? is it just me or is Futaba dead? any interesting boards on either or protips on how to navigate them? any interesting stories or trivia?
I learn Japanese and I love 4chan so I'd like to replicate this experience in a different environment

PS design of their imageboards makes more sense when you open them on your smartphone is what I realised today...
