Don't feel bad. The UFO route during the stage is quite strict, and it punishes you for not knowing which statics UFOs are next. The UFO route is definitely something of a "knowledge check".
On the other hand, you don't need to execute a perfect UFO route: Nue herself will give you plenty of resources, and her attacks aren't too difficult.
