I feel like if the theory had a certain strength to it people might see it as a funny meme, but from that you might actually get some who truly believe it. Just look at Ikuko = Yasu, which actually has some people who wholeheartedly believe in it. To be believed at this point though, I'd probably say it has to be at a certain point between both memeability and possibility for people to both hear of it as a meme, and take it into actual consideration as a possible truth. For example, I don't think something like Maerosatrice would be truly believed because it's too much of a meme, while something like Rosatrice was actually believed by some at the time.
I might just be talking shit here though, since I'm not exactly a psychologist.
