I'm Hispanic (Colombian, brown skinned) and I just got back from a study abroad.

You'll be fine, Japan doesn't know what Hispanics are, so they wont be able to be racist to you. I had several people gimme double-takes or awkward pauses when I told them "I'm American" in response to "where are you from?". The worst I've had happen is those guys on the street handing out fliers/tissues would double take and sometimes withdraw their offering once they realized I'm a gaijin.

is right that some people (dancing enhtusiasts/girls) will value dancing a lot, but its not required at all to get around/make friends.
