(Sorry for the esl in advance) I avoided master/vocaloid doujins for that exact reason, because that kind of relationship was always used for drama and what >>24326745 explained. It's such a shame too, since it's a cute concept. For vocaloid producers, they are a seperate entity but also partly a version of themselves that understands and knows them but can voice what the producer/"master" don't/can't do for various reasons, making it not only able to express themselves but also reflect on themselves. Which would be a pretty intimate(not necessarily in the lewd sense) relationship if vocaloids would physically exist. Almost the same can also be said about hardcore fans of each loids too.
Anyway, I'd say it was much more pleasantly used in songs which is what I was talking about, except for some few cases of "vocaloid goes yandere and stabs other loids".

I also fully agree on the reason why it died down. This, and the fact that it might've bordered too much on self-insertion sometimes.
