Because of bad writing. Alicia beating her at Naggiar was one of the biggest ass pulls I've ever seen in my life and still makes me salty.

Don't worry though, I have a feeling that they'll find some way to bullshit her back to life since she's the mascot of the series and it's weird to have the face of the series die an ridiculously tragic death in the first game.
