Squids started a race war with the Octos for the sole right to live above ground, consistently call for their extinction, and the main character's advisor basically says

The one Octoling in the idol group that hosts the talk show in this game has to lie about their race and is only allowed to live because she's Inkling-passing and her hime-sama best friend covers for her.
The Inklings have somehow managed to only get more radicalized in the time since the war passed generations ago, and consistently hold mock race wars as Splatfests to celebrate the desecration of their enemy's corpses. The Inklings at large believe they committed an ethnic cleansing, and they're extremely proud of it. Only a few people know that Octolings still survive underground, and of those people, almost all of them are committed to ending the genocide their forefathers began.
Splatoon 1's entire plot is about continuing the ethnic cleansing, and the idol group of Calli and Marie are actually the equivalent of SS officers enforcing the separation of Inkopolis and the Ghettoctos.
Very riveting backstory, and I have no idea why Nintendo did that!

Ina needs a lot more practice if she wants to be a pro idol singer, but I doubt thats her goal. This feels like listening to your friend or gf sing at a karaoke. Shes nervous. She practiced alone abit, but clearly she's an amatuer. And yet you love it. Youre sitting there, with the biggest smile, thinking to yourself what an absolute angel she is. She's not the best singer on objective terms, but she's the best singer for my heart.
