As far as Higurashi goes, Umineko is expanding on very vague concepts introduced towards the ending of Higurashi. Even without Umineko, you have some kind of Fragment Hopping God-like Rika playing with people's lives, just even less of an idea about what the hell any of that meant.

I do think since R07 keeping these connection so vague they kind of detract from Umineko in a way though, especially how Bernkastel's past is all left in very vague Higurashi references in spite of her getting elevated to the position of main antagonist. She'd certainly have something much more direct and solid if she had been an actual pure Umineko character.
