It's not like the decision to go for a more explicitly scary tone for that scene is something exclusive to the PS3 remake. Kei Natsumi chose to do the exact same thing in the manga, only with better execution. The idea itself isn't bad nor does it go against her intended character. If anything the way it plays with your expectations and highlights the contrast in her two personas leads well into the discussion Battler then has with George and Jessica about her strange behavior, making for a perfect vehicle with which explore her character.
