For the second sentence, is he using the て form to indicate cause/effect? Like, "it is an abbreviation and therefore is semi-pro?"

I know he's trying to say "that's why they call it/me semi-pro, because I'm pro at catching セミ or something like that, I just don't understand the grammar or how he goes about expressing that statement
