>Assassin's motivation was Abe's alleged ties to a "certain religious group" the media refuses to name
>Later reports say that he initially was planning to kill the leader of that religion, but killed Abe instead when he discovered he wouldn't be able to
At first I thought the guy must be the standard conspiracy nut and the religious group in question was the Jews or maybe the Christians, but the second bit makes me think it's Soka Gakkai. For those that don't know, it's a major new religious group/cult in Japan, and their associated political party (Komeito) are coalition partners with Abe's party in the Japanese parliament. Considering that it seems unlikely this guy would ever have a realistic chance of killing the Pope or the Chief Rabbi of Israel in the middle of Nara, Soka Gakkai seems like the most likely religion he'd think he might be able to kill a leader of at a Japanese political rally. Therefore, it looks like the motivation for the assassination was likely that this guy was pissed off at Soka Gakkai for some reason, and he took it out on Abe for his party being allies with them.
