First of all, relax. You're going to be fine, you're over-exaggerating your own personal failures. The reality of learning a language is that you WILL forget words, just like we forget them all the time in English. However, through repetition, focused learning, exposure, and just general usage, you will learn to master them. Today, as I was going through my own personal mining deck, I somehow forgot 低い - in a conversation or written out in kana, I instinctively know what the meaning was, but the kanji character keeps eluding me. I wrote it out, made some sentences with it, and now I'm 99% sure I won't forget it in the near future.

That being said, RTK isn't that great as it teaches you narratives in English rather than explicit readings. It's good as a primer, but you'll need to transition to more normative readings. Getting started with an Anki deck might be a more productive usage of your time to drill the definitions into you since you also get exposed to sentences utilizing them.
