“It’s not about the taste, it’s about your reputation! You served some of the most violent people in Gensokyo! If they ever found out you broke pasta — not just for Hana, for them — your credibility would be shot!” Aya’s attempts to protect the human from the social consequences of his actions fell on deaf ears.

“Eh, you’re overreacting. You said you wanted to know how Hana liked her food, right? Back when she was six, she used to play outside near the shrine. She was a little bundle of energy and always eager to explore.” As he mixed together a bechamel, Aya noticed him add extra cheese to mask the taste of vegetables. Fit for a child’s palette. “One spring while Reimu and I were with her, Hana stepped in a pile of leaves a snake was hiding under. The snake reared up and hissed at her, but before it could lunge, Reimu had already blasted it apart. It was a mess. Hana started crying for a few days afterwards. For months, she absolutely hated long noodles or anything red.”

It was a cute story and had a good morals humans and youkai could appreciate: Be careful of your surroundings and always be prepared to kill for your children. “Hana must’ve been afraid of snakes ever since, huh?”

“Actually, she got over it pretty quickly. The next week, she insisted on bringing one of Reimu’s gohei outside to hunt the 'stringy youkai’. Hana refused to eat any noodles longer than her hand because they were all the ‘youkai’s evil friends’.” His chest swelled with paternal pride. “She’s tough and a little strong-willed. I just wonder how she’s dealing with things, if Marisa and Aunn are looking after her…” He stopped stirring the pot, his expression darkening, certainly concerned about his daughter’s well-being.

The tengu squeezed Anon’s shoulder. “She’s every bit as smart as her father. I’m sure she knows how to handle herself. Even with Marisa to take care of, Aunn’s responsible enough to make sure Hana doesn’t end up in trouble.” Hiding her thoughts with a smile, Aya considered Hana’s companions. Marisa and Aunn weren’t only close to Anon, they were close to Okina. Even if Marisa held her independence, that pervert goddess might try to involve his daughter in her schemes through Aunn. Reimu was younger than her when she started solving incidents, but she wasn’t a schemer nor were incidents this… perverse. Something this traumatic and personal might just infect Hana the same way it did her mother.

When Anon turned back to Aya, he realized his mask was slipping and cheerfully re-directed to their meals. “Ah. We should probably eat now. I might have gotten a bit carried away with this.” Even after taking seconds, both the tengu and human’s dishes were barely dented. Monopolizing on the situation, Aya insisted on exchanging leftovers. Battles neither begin nor end at the battlefield, and the same hold true for a man’s stomach. “Of course I don’t mind taking it home, since you don’t mind keeping my food either. It didn’t taste terribly inedible, did it?” With subtle suggestions, the reporter successfully finished her transaction, winning Anon’s stomach and soon, heart.

As time passed, Aya continued to bother her companion with questions about Hana before transitioning to questions about children in general. More than learning about Anon’s experiences, it was preparation for her own future. All the resources she needed: Toys, blankets, clothes, high chairs — another bribe from Yukari wouldn’t hurt. But by then, the HSE should be destroyed and she’ll have published her seminal work chronicling the Sage’s transgressions. By then, her children will be far safer than ever...

Bellies full and bodies washed, the time came for Anon and Aya to enter the bedroom once more. He kept silent as always. The candles were dimmer, suited for rest and relaxation instead of wild procreation. Breaking routine once more, he entered the bed first before holding the covers open for Aya. “Come on in.” His smile was unbroken, but his voice wavered.

Aya could join him in bed. They’d cuddle, fall asleep together, maybe kiss again. Then the tengu would fly back home and come back the next night to repeat the process again, edging a little closer to Anon but fearing the slightest bit of sexual contact. For three more nights she could live in a quiet dream of sleeping with the man she loved. All she had to was say ‘yes’.

“Do you really want this?” She stood still, looking straight into the bottomless pits he called pupils.

He hesitated. “Of course, dear.”

Walking around the bed, Aya sat down on the covers next to Anon. “You had a really good chance here. I want to believe you, really. I don’t even need to think it’s true: I just want to believe your words. But I know a lie when I hear one. You, Anon, are a very kind, gentle, loving man. You’re just a terrible liar.”
