Too bad that even in Japan, examples of attention-seekers assaulting public figures (singers, actors, entertainers, whatever you have) in public places have been a common occurance since the postwar period, and in most of the instances the attacker was much better armed and came much closer to the goal than Umeda's case, if anything.
See for reference: http://realsound.jp/2014/05/post-619.html..
Your little pet theory is built under the preconception that it could only happens with idol groups and in modern ages because you see both of them as the main catalysts for such events -- but, say what, everything flies right out of the window when read things like a 1966 attempted homicide-suicide involving a katana and the Komadori Sisters (ironically, the attacker was the one of the two who got away with less injuries). Or Hibari Misora getting stalked and having acid thrown on her face in 1957.
Those were times when idol groups as we know now didn't exist in any form yet, and 'otaku' was still written 御宅 and used a polite pronoun, so - surprise! - turns out you can't explain everything by falling back on the same generic boogeymen.
See, Anon, the real "problem" here (if you even want to call it so) is that in order to give off an aura of cordiality, entertainers often lower their guard to the public, which as a side-effect also exposes them to such dangers.
Then again, if they were to keep a sheltered life all the time, they wouldn't be public figures anymore (having too many bodyguards around will make people think you're "putting on airs"), so there you have it.
