Mareni is indeed known for his difficult style composed on lengthy sentences and an expansive vocabulary which makes heavy use of older, pre-war Japanese constructs. If you read EGS, you'll see his prose mentioned as a negative and a positive pretty consistently. It should be noted, though, that despite being comparatively difficult, he's not an author that would completely floor a literate Japanese individual, and indeed if I recall the thieves part only took me like 10-20 minutes to get through, so if you struggled so much it's likely that you just don't really know Japanese well in the first place. Coming back in 2~ year will yield very different results.

Recommendations are a pretty personal thing so it can be tough. There are people who like Liar-Soft games (https://vndb.org/p29)(pic related even though it's rail-soft), there are people who like plain "date cute girls" games (https://vndb.org/v6682)), there are people who like porn-based games and there are people who like games with no porn.

Recommendations are tough to give, and just saying "recommend me a VN" is pretty bad for those reasons. But I see nothing wrong with asking for recommendations like "What are some Visual Novels that handle college-age romance really well"?, or something of the sort. Of course, all the novels on /vg/'s recommendation chart are considered good by a number of people, so you can use that as a jump pad. The classics Fate Stay Night, Umineko/Higurashi, everything by Romeo Tanaka/Mareni/WhateverWriterYouComeToLike, Lilith nukige... Nitro+ games like Muramasa... I don't know where I'm going with this.
