If we only ever did research into "practical" immediate application subjects, we'd still be in the dark ages. The whole theory of electrodynamics depends on vector caclulus, and the calculations would be impossible without complex variable theory. Now, vector calculus you might be able to argue would have appeared from scratch based or building on applied research into mechanics (I doubt it), however complex variables would never have appeared without mathematicians playing around with abstract polynomial equations.

Not only are you completely short-sighted if you think research into THE FUNDAMENTAL NATURE OF THE UNIVERSE WE LIVE IN is useless and will never have practical applications, but you are an uncultured swine who I am uncomfortable about allowing to remain part of humanity.
