Don't worry, just play on easy/normal and the games literally play themselves. The complexity is there, but ultimately it's very easy to beat them without really learning the mechanics. I was the same way as you, afraid to play them for their complexity, but it's all unnecessary. Just play one VB game on easy/normal (preferably starting Empire I think?) and watch your fears melt away.
