That is how you play, not dealing into hands and trying to tsumo, or using tricky waits, or fast riichi's when applicable. You don't lose unless you come in last, and if you never deal into people, you have a good chance of not being last.
You must never play defense and deal everything you don't need. Maybe you should learn to play instead.
