The state of the threads is a reflection not of 07th Expansion, but rather the hopelessness of living in the modern West. The same waves of bitter cynicism run consistently through more and more Western fandoms and in society at large in general. The WTC characters are merely an outlet for frustration with our broken societies. It's sad for them, but not something that can really be helped at the moment.
