Also upgrading the main weapon of respective characters gives them other special abilities. The same is true of other upgradeable skills. Like here in case of Sakuya she gains a chance to attack twice with her sword and since she's a power house (dealing 100+ damage on level 3) you can image how useful she is later. I would also recommend keeping Nitori and Sanae in the party since they both have pretty good Last Words.
