i fixed it!

turns out the problem was something or other to do with gamma. i don't know what exactly was wrong, but after experimenting with the gamma setting i managed to achieve a consistent result among how image editors and viewers display the image and web browsers (+ anki) display the image.

here's the imagemagick command to convert the hjgp images properly:
>mogrify -filter catrom -resize 1330 -gamma 0.45 -brightness-contrast -18x0 -channel RGB -negate -brightness-contrast 0x-20 -brightness-contrast -13x0 *.png
(again, make sure you run this from the right directory!)
