Let me explain this in simple words.

1. Rankings used to matter because there was a thing called "media senbatsu". Basically, whenever AKB would appear in a major public event, like a TV commercial or some non-48G shows, ONLY the girls in the media senbatsu would appear. For example, if we had the Papipupepo commercials back then, you would ONLY see high ranking girls like Tomochin and Mariko in it.

Obviously that hasn't been the case for a long time. Now, all you need is to be a girl that management wants to push. If there's a commercial to be filmed, it will be with a girl like Mion instead of Churi.

2. SSK singles suck ass. KFC may have been a huge hit, but even that song took a major hit in production budget compared to previous SSK singles. Remember the Flying Get MV was a full-on 25-min Kung Fu drama. Sato Amina's few seconds in Iwake Maybe probably seems like a luxury to today's lower-senbatsu girls.

3. On top of that, as the total number of votes go up every year, the value of your votes automatically go down. It's simple mathematics.
