Sorry, I need to get this out of my system. "Just be yourself" is one of, if not the most worthless "advice" people give. If you hear someone say it, it's because they're too stupid or apathetic to tell you anything worthwhile. Now the most infuriating thing is that it actually is good advice in certain contexts, and makes much more sense if you rephrase it: "don't be fake". Improve yourself so you become someone you want to be. Don't lie about yourself because other people hate it and it shows you're ashamed of yourself. And never use "being yourself" as an excuse for being complacent and lazy.
