>It's not a real sequel in the sense that it can be enjoyed without knowing about Higurashi. But you miss out on all the Higurashi references, which makes certain scenes lose most of the impact.

I think the story itself is also built with the knowledge and expectations of Higurashi.

The way the story works, it makes you think it's similar to Higurashi, if Battler defeats the witch and finds the culprit, he's released and can go at home with his family in a "miracle" Kakera. Of course, we later find the truth and we know it is more complex than that.

Even Umineko's tea party is straight up a deconstruction of Higurashi's.
