Point un: AKB48 was at no point officially nominated to be the opener of the Tokyo Olympics, there's no official statement from anyone even hinting to that. In fact, no details on the performers, the schedule, the infrastructure or anythining have been finalized yet, everything is still up in the air. Good job linking to me an article running on a false and unsubstantiated premise, you muppet. Maybe you should emancipate and learn Japanese like everyone else, since it's obvious English sources care nothing about fact-checking.

Point deux: the "row" invented by Guardian basically boiled down to just Matsuko saying he (yes, he) didn't personally want AKB48 to perform at the Olympics and that it was more suitable to have a cermony geared toward tradition. If you believe there was any follow-up from any other journalist, writer, critic or businessman, you've clearly a wrong idea of the circumstances behind this statement.
Matsuko Deluxe, for those who forgot or simply don't know, is a comedian who gets paid to act contrarian about anyone and anything, his responses get fiercer the more famous or influential he considers his targets to be. Don't think he is a critic or anyone worth taking seriously. The fact he even co-hosts a program with Ariyoshi should make clear to anyone what character he's playing to the crowd.
You can't even argue he said any of this out of honest feelings, because the (literal) faggot has been shilling for H!P so hard recently (partly also to spite AKB, for what it is worth), it's obvious there are also vested interests behind all of this.
